Recipe to losing weight | Anna Verhulst | TEDxMaastricht

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Anna Verhulst (23) is a fifth year medical student at Maastricht University, doing her internship in Eindhoven. She has a particular interest in the fields of oncology and sports medicine, but isn’t quite sure yet what kind of doctor she wants to become when she graduates in 2016.

Anna is a keen writer, sharing her experiences as a junior intern through columns, essays and opinion pieces. A selection of her publications can be found at annaverhulst.blogspot.nl. In between her internships, she is also involved in a research project that explores the possibilities of exercise rehabilitation in cancer survivors.

On stage at TEDx Maastricht 2014, Anna will share a story that she has purposely kept silent for a long time. It is a story that has nothing to do with her work as a medical student, researcher or writer. It is her personal story, for which she has finally worked up the courage to share it with the public.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. Come on everybody, lets all do the Standard American Diet (SAD) Cheer, and test those years of Programming.

  3. weight loss, strength, endurance, @t

  4. "We" were never "cavemen". Darwinism is false. Selection from existing genes does happen, but what she is referencing is a fairytale.

  5. What a waste of my time

  6. What she's saying is true and important, BUT the title of the video is completely (and perhaps purposely) misleading. There is wisdom here but absolutely no information. There is no recipe.

  7. I loved this TedX. Really good, i feel exactly the same as the speaker, but someday that will change, i hope so. XD

  8. Thank you for sharing your story. You are truly inspiring!

  9. I think she made great progress. I feel for her, but honestly, there was nothing informative about this video. I was hoping for some facts.

  10. The answer to weight loss is , was and always will be…no drum rolls please : FASTING and EXERCISE.
This is what we need to do ,this is what our ancestors had to do ( they didnt have a choice you see ) , Hunt for food hence exercise and wait for the next hunt hence fasting.
Search the yooutube for the word intermittent fasting and its benefits you will see how it has changed thousands of lives and we need not search for exercise to know that it works .
The moment when these two ingredients meet the recipe is complete.
    Thanks for reading guys….
    cheers….

  11. They talk talk talk but do not tell you much.

  12. Please not in kilometres

  13. This is what happens when an inexperienced over ambitious young person gives a TED talk! What a waste of time no real contents, just a platform for her to tell her own personal story ! 😂😂😂

  14. recipe to losing 10 minutes

  15. God bless u sweetheart …. welcome

  16. OMG…wonderful!!!
    Thank u!

  17. God's own biker - Subin

I got a McDonald's ad for this video.. Irony of the century!!!

  18. Tricia Fat and Sassy

    Thank you

  19. I missed the part where she talks about how to lose weight

  20. Marie-Josée Bouliane

Bravo ! I would just like to add that you don't have a new body ; it is still the same but it as simply changed, transformed its appearance and let go of unnecessary weight to carry and to hide behind…

  21. Won't you be my Frau?

  22. Smart as a whip & cute as a button.

  23. This is a bunch of nothingness. Really was click bait and a waste of time.

  24. The Titel doesn't match the content

  25. I was hoping she'd elaborate on the personal journey to discovering how what worked for her, worked. Rather, this talk was more of a personal milestone toward alleviating her insecurity, with the audience as her tool. It was a disappointing TED talk because of this.

And that's coming from someone who has lost over 100lbs.

  26. Who’s pool did you rent moit?

  27. very moving and brave talk

  28. I didnt really get what the video was about….?

  29. I TAKE IT THAT YOURE NEVER GOING TO TELL ME WHAT TO EAT.

  30. I didn't loose weight but I slept like a baby while watching this.

  31. I lost 60 pounds a 15 years back and still have to work on the intake of food, I quit drinking 40 years ago, had a problem with that as well, kinda like eating. Quit tobacco 18 months ago after 45 years of use and still crave it, kinda like food, point is in all of these things it takes willpower to accomplish anything in life that is worth doing, just keep trying in the end you will work it out. The woman in the speech should be proud of what she has done, overcoming fear is real and takes that willpower thing I was speaking of, keep going girl!!

  32. Watch this anak. Taba niya pala dati

  33. Marion Benedicto

  35. It's a good talk but a frustrating video because of the title.
A better title might be, how to make peace with your body image. The current title makes it seem like we would get information on how to lose weight.

  36. I now have the recipe for weight loss! All other sources were vague but not this one . . .

  37. BandNerdGreenHoodie

So what's the recipe for losing weight?

  38. Talking for 9 minutes and saying nothing.

  39. There was no useful information to take away in this video

  40. The intro made me so uncomfortable that went to the basement, I dusted off the seat of the exercycle, swept the cob webs off the peddles and wheezed away 40 calories watching to the end. The pulse shot up but the heart survived, and I’m feel pretty good. Now the hard part,….keeping up the effort.

  41. Eat when you hungry, eat exactly what you feel like eating, stop the instant you feel full, wait to feel actual hunger again, and repeatYou won't have a weight problem or a food problem. It sounds simple I know. Because it is.

  42. Some of the people commenting here would be happier not watching TED Talks… ever…

  43. 7 billion and counting , weight loss is coming weather you want it or not!!

  44. Cant believe that you were that 15 yr old girl….Amazing !!!!!!!!!!

  45. "Recipe to losing weight" is the title, NOT "How to feel good about yourself after you lose the weight.

  46. Loosing weight is a simple problem. Recipe: 1) Eat less. 2) Move more.

  47. Mohammad Madankar

Every move or decision we make is about three thing: motivation, motivation and motivation, if you are motivated enough nothing can stop you.

  48. Title should be, “Overcoming Body Image.” Nothing was stated about how she lost so much weight in a year. Perhaps she put the fries down and picked up an apple. All we can do is guess. Came here to listen about the recipe for weight loss not about body image.
